2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA

New for 2017

For 2017, the CLA gets exterior styling revisions and interior trim changes.

More Practical Than a Coupe, More Stylish Than a Sedan

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA straddles categories to offer an unusual and practical luxury car package. This “four-door coupe” is more stylish than a traditional sedan but offers the same versatility—including a usable back seat—that regular coupes can only dream of. On top of that, the CLA is efficient, small, and affordably priced—not words you often hear associated with Mercedes-Benz.

Performance

The CLA is a different kind of Mercedes-Benz. It has a smaller footprint than the automaker’s traditional sedans and uses smaller, more efficient engines. The CLA is a car for buyers who believe luxury shouldn’t mean excess.

The CLA 250 model uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine which produces 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque and is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automated transmission. The CLA 250 comes standard with front-wheel drive but is also offered with the manufacturer's 4MATIC® all-wheel drive. It will do 0 to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds (6.8 seconds with 4MATIC®) and reach a top speed of 130 mph.

While the CLA 250 is sporty, the Mercedes-AMG® CLA 45 is a bonafide hot rod with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 375 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. The CLA 45 also gets a special AMG® Speedshift seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an available front limited-slip differential. Available only with 4MATIC® all-wheel drive, it will do 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph.

EPA-rated fuel economy for the CLA 250 is 29 mpg combined (24 mpg city, 36 mpg highway) with front-wheel drive, and 27 mpg combined (23 mpg city, 32 mpg highway) with all-wheel drive. The CLA 45 is rated at 26 mpg combined (23 mpg city, 30 mpg highway).*

Features

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA is a four-door, five-seat vehicle. Mercedes-Benz describes it as a coupe, but the layout is more like a conventional sedan. Pricing starts at $32,400.**

Standard equipment on the CLA 250 model includes keyless start, 8.0-inch display screen, dual-zone automatic climate control, electronic shifter, power front seats, split-folding rear seats, ambient interior lighting, 17-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth®, and USB interface.

The AMG® CLA 45 includes the applicable standard features from the CLA 250, but adds model-specific styling elements and upgraded mechanicals. The changes include the more powerful 2.0-liter engine and AMG® Speedshift transmission, AMG® sport suspension, sport exhaust, high-performance brakes, 18-inch wheels, a sport steering wheel, and model-specific front seats with extra side bolstering.

Optional features include a panoramic roof, harmon/kardon® audio system, heated front seats, leather upholstery, auto-dimming mirrors, navigation, Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatibility, and an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot. The CLA 45 is also available with a limited-slip differential, adaptive suspension, “Race Mode,” and a top-speed limiter raised to 167 mph as part of the AMG® Dynamic Plus Package.

Design

The CLA bends the rules not just for Mercedes, but for car design in general. It’s what Mercedes calls a “four-door coupe” with four full-size doors, but a low, sloping roofline meant to give the CLA a more stylish look than a traditional sedan. Coupes are sold almost purely on style, and the CLA certainly manages to stand out from the crowd.

Mercedes gave the CLA a facelift for the 2017 model year, helping to keep the design fresh. All models get a new front bumper with a distinctive strip that comes in silver, black, or chrome. The rear bumper is new as well and is available with a trim strip that matches the front. Changes to the trim panels for the tailpipes help visually widen the CLA, something the massive grille and low-level air intake at the front do as well.

The interior retains the same basic look as the previous model year, but with some notable updates. The freestanding 8.0-inch central display screen is thinner than before, and new dials and red needles in the instrument cluster make it easier to read the gauges. The interior also features new seat covers, chrome-plated controls, and new trim elements.

The CLA’s advantage over a conventional coupe is practicality. Four doors and rear seats with 27.1 inches of legroom mean carrying passengers on a regular basis is a realistic option. The CLA also offers 13.1 cubic feet of trunk space, with a folding rear seatback to accommodate longer items.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, adaptive braking technology with hill-start assist, predictive brake priming, automatic brake drying, and brake hold, rearview camera, and eight airbags. Optional safety features include blind-spot assist, Parking Pilot, ATTENTION ASSIST®, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Verdict

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA is a different kind of luxury car.
