2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

New for 2017

Changes for 2017 are limited to a new nine-speed automatic transmission in S 550 models, a new 18-inch wheel design, MAGIC SKY CONTROL® panoramic roof, and new paint and interior upholstery colors.

The Luxury Sedan Standard

No car epitomizes its segment quite like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The Mercedes-Benz flagship sedan not only sets the standard for other luxury cars, it’s also seen as a preview of the technology that will eventually trickle down to mainstream cars. The 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class enters the new model year with a handful of refinements that ensure it will continue to be the yardstick for luxury automobiles.

Performance

Mercedes-Benz continues to offer buyers an impressive array of choices, including V8 and V12 engines, a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and two AMG® performance models. It’s hard to know which one to pick.

The S 550 model uses a 4.7-liter V8, producing 449 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. It’s one of the models to get the new-for-2017 nine-speed automatic transmission, which replaces the previous seven-speed unit. As before, rear-wheel drive is standard while 4MATIC® all-wheel drive is optional. The S 550 does 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and is electronically limited to 130 mph. It gets an EPA-rated 21 mpg combined (18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway)* with rear-wheel drive, and 20 mpg combined (16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway)* with all-wheel drive.

The S 550e plug-in hybrid introduced for the 2016 model year also returns. Its powertrain combines a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 and seven-speed automatic with an electric motor, for a total of 436 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. The S 550e will do 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and is limited to 130 mph in hybrid mode. It can also travel up to 14 miles on electric power at speeds of up to 87 mph. It also gets an EPA-rated 58 MPGe combined in hybrid mode, and 26 mpg combined on gasoline.*

Arguably the flagship of the Mercedes lineup is the S 600. It boasts a 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V12, with 523 horsepower and 612 pound-feet of torque. The V12 is only available with a seven-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Mercedes-Benz says the S 600 will do 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, and tops out at 130 mph. It gets an EPA-rated 16 mpg combined (13 mpg city, 22 mpg highway).*

Besides the “regular” models, Mercedes-Benz also offers two AMG® performance variants. The AMG® S 63 4MATIC® has a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with 577 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque, harnessed to a seven-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. The AMG® S 65 gets a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 boasting 621 hp and 738 lb-ft, a seven-speed automatic, and rear-wheel drive.

The AMG® S 63 will do 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and get 18 mpg combined (15 mpg city, 23 mpg highway)*, while the AMG® S 65 will reach 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, and return 16 mpg combined (13 mpg city, 22 mpg highway).*

Design

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class manages to be stylish yet restrained. Its design is defined by subtle details, rather than flashy styling flourishes. The lines flow smoothly from front to rear, and the laid-back grille gives the car a streamlined appearance. The current-generation S-Class was also the first car to go on sale without a single lightbulb. Instead, 500 LEDs do the job of lighting it.

The S-Class continues to have one of the nicest interiors in the business. The seats are comfortable, the wood and leather trim looks great, and the ambient lighting adds a nice, modern touch. Mercedes-Benz equipped the S-Class with wraparound screens in place of the traditional gauge cluster and center-stack display, streamlining the interface for the driver. Also helping in the area of infotainment functions is the brand's clever central controller, which combines a touchpad and rotary knob.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, copious airbags, and the automaker's Collision Prevention Assist Plus and Attention Assist® driver aids.

Optional features include a Surround View Camera System and the Driver Assistance Package. The latter bundles blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, Speed Limit Info, and DISTRONIC PLUS®, which provides automatic braking and a limited degree of automated steering.

Verdict

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the standard against which other luxury sedans are measured.
