Mercedes-Benz Uses AR to Help Save Lives

Ever heard of the "jaws of life"? A hydraulic tool used by first responders, the jaws of life can be used to cut, spread, or otherwise manipulate a crashed automobile to make it easier for emergency personnel to save lives in case of an accident. But automobiles aren't just steel boxes on wheels--they contain fuel lines, electrical wiring, and other things that might make a dangerous situation worse. That's why the team at Mercedes-Benz of Silver Spring is so impressed with Mercedes-Benz and its latest update to the Rescue Assist App.

The Rescue Assist App (which is available for free in 24 languages for iOS and Android) contains "rescue cards," digital sheets of important information on Mercedes-Benz vehicles for first responders. The cards show locations of fuel lines, airbags, batteries and in the case of hybrid or electric vehicles, the location of high voltage components. To use the app, first responders simply use the camera on their app or tablet to scan a QR code printed on the vehicle (found on the fuel cap and the B-pillar), and the relevant rescue card shows up.

Taking things one step further, Mercedes-Benz recently updated the app, adding 3D models of vehicles which can be scaled up and down and freely rotated, as well as photo-realistic details that can be (in most cases) mapped to the damaged vehicle. This change makes it easier than ever for first responders to use the app to save lives.
